Event details
The third annual Spike Out Sarcoma volleyball tournament is upon us with a new location, more teams and a bigger opportunity to raise funds for cancer research!
Date: Apr. 14, 2018
New location: King Louie’s (600 N English Station Rd, Louisville, KY 40223)
Time: First round of the tournament kicks off at 11 a.m. (but we’ll be there all day!)
Registration information
Mark your calendar! Registration is closed.
Price: $35 per person (includes shirt)
Details: You must register as a team rather than as an individual player. Each team must have a minimum of six players and a maximum of ten players. All players must register in advance.
Tournament rules*
This year’s tournament will be bigger and better than ever! Please read through the information below as we have adjusted our tournament rules this year.
There will be 24 team slots available to fill the bracket. Each team should consist of between six and ten players. Standard volleyball rules apply – you can have up to six players on the court at a time. Your team must consist of at least two members of each gender.
We will have pool play followed by tournament play. Pool play will consist of six pools of four teams; each team will play a total of three single games in pool play. Following seeding from pool play, there will be a single elimination tournament. Unlike pool play, the tournament will be match play scored 21-21-15. The winner of the match (best two out of three) will advance to the next round of the tournament.
When registering, you must rank your team’s skill level between the following three options:
Beginners (“A couple of us made the B-team during 6th grade volleyball try-outs.”)
Intermediate (“We dabble.”)
Advanced (“This ain’t our first rodeo.”)
Initial pool seeding will be organized by skill level (as balanced as possible).
The registrant for each team will be considered the team captain and will be responsible for relaying information to team members. Please note that the registration form will link to a PayPal page to submit payment; however, you are not required to have a PayPal account in order to register. Simply click on "Pay with debit or credit card" toward the bottom of the payment section to check out as a guest.
The winning team will receive their money back.
*Please note that tournament details are subject to change.

Special thanks to the 2018 Spike Out Sarcoma sponsors:
In addition to Steven, this year's volleyball tournament will honor Evan Gates who passed away at age 15 from the same type of cancer Steven had. See the letter from his family below to learn more about Evan's story.
In December of 2003, our son Evan was diagnosed with a stage 4 sarcoma, desmoplastic small round cell tumor, DSRCT, at Kosair Children's Hospital here in Louisville. Evan was 14 years old, a Freshman at St. X, a smart, loving, inquisitive and somewhat mischievous young man. At that time, Kosair had only seen a few cases of DSRCT, one being a young lady from Elizabethtown.
There was also a student who was several years ahead of Evan at St. Albert, who was treated elsewhere in Louisville.
Most of our son's treatments were administered at Kosair, except his surgeries that were performed in New York at Memorial Sloan Kettering.
After 11 months of procedures and fighting, on November 18, 2004, Evan passed away after extreme complications from 7 chemotherapy cycles, 3 major surgeries and the regimen of a Bone Marrow Transplant.
Evan was the bravest man we will ever know.
He fought to the end while showing kindness, appreciation and continuous hope to everyone he encountered.
He will always be our HERO!
We miss Evan every day and take comfort in the efforts and fund raising activities, focusing on the battle against sarcomas and other cancers.
Evan has an educational fund at St. X that is now very close to supporting a full scholarship every year to a student. We are happy that his spirit continues on through this effort.
Our family thanks everyone for your help and participation.
Thank You,
Sheridan, Diane & Jeff
Join us on Saturday, Apr. 14 to honor Steven and Evan and raise funds to help find a cure for DSRCT.
